Fire and Rescue Recruit
This is entry level, manual and technical position in fire suppression, prevention, rescue, communications, and emergency medical services involving duties and responsibilities of an emergency and hazardous nature on a rotating shift basis which may require the highest level of sustained exertion and agility. Work involves exposure to extreme heat, dirt, low visibility and confined spaces, extreme heights, swift and standing water, disease, death in many forms and other unpleasant conditions.
Firefighters assigned to fire suppression duties will respond to fire alarms and other emergency or service calls. Employee will lift, carry, drag, lay and connect hose lines and appliances, hold nozzles and direct water streams, utilize fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, rope lines, ladders and other emergency equipment as necessary.
Firefighters will be assigned to Emergency Medical Services duties and will respond to emergency incidents with rescue and fire companies. Employee will lift, carry, transport persons in ambulances and otherwise provide efficient and immediate care to the ill or injured at the scene of an incident and during transport.
ALL PERSONNEL WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK, ON AVERAGE, A 48 HOUR WEEK. THIS WILL INCLUDE HOLIDAYS & WEEKENDS. DURING CERTAIN EVENTS YOU MAY BE REQUIRED TO WORK FOR LONGER PERIODS OF TIME.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a US Citizen or resident alien
- High School graduate or equivalent acceptable in the State of Maryland.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age as of first day of employment. Applicants are permitted to take the entrance examination six months before their eighteenth birthday.
- Drivers' License - Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
- All applicants selected for hiring will be required to sign an agreement stating that they are tobacco-free (ON AND OFF DUTY) upon appointment and will remain so through out their length of service in the Division of Fire and Rescue Services or be subject to immediate termination.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications as presented on the County application will be scheduled to participate in a written examination. Scheduling letters with times and details will be sent out prior to the test date. Applicants who receive a passing score on the written examination will be placed on the eligible list with a rating of "Qualified".

CANDIDATE PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST (CPAT):
The CPAT must be completed within a specified time limit prior to position appointment. It consists of eight (8) stations designed to demonstrate the candidate's physical ability to be trained as a firefighter/rescuer. The stations are, in order:
- Stair climb
- Hose drag
- Equipment carry
- Ladder raise and extension
- Forcible entry
- Search
- Rescue drag
- Ceiling breach and pull
If you pass the written entrance exam, you will be given task specific orientation and testing information. This will include hands on orientation to the test equipment immediately after the written exam. Additional information on CPAT will be provided prior to and immediately after the written exam as well as in informational sessions offered by the Department.
IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED TO BEGIN PHYSICAL CONDITIONING NOW, TO INCLUDE PUSHUPS, SIT-UPS, PULL-UPS, AND RUNNING A TIMED MILE AND A HALF.
In an effort to help you prepare for CPAT, there is a 12-week Fitness Mentoring program held three times a week at the Montgomery County Public Safety Training Academy. Attendance and participation in this mentoring program is voluntary however, approximately 85% of individuals who attend mentoring or a regular basis successfully complete CPAT on test day.
